Ronald McDonald House Charities of Norfolk (RMHC-Norfolk), an affiliate of Ronald McDonald House Charities, Inc.®, was established to be a “Home Away From Home” for families who want to be near their child (age 21 and under) receiving medical treatment at one of the local hospitals.
RMHC-Norfolk is conveniently located adjacent to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters at 404 Colley Ave, Norfolk, VA. We benefit families by subsidizing the costs of overnight accommodations for families who otherwise would be forced to commute daily.
RMHC-Norfolk is truly a house that love built. The house was opened on December 10, 1981. The effort was lead by a group of concerned parents, Children’s Hospital representatives, and the Tidewater McDonald’s Association. The three-story colonial style brick house was designed and decorated with the physical and emotional comforts of its guest in mind. Cheerful, yet subdued colors are used throughout the house and the large comfortable rooms provide a place for quiet retreat. The House originally began with only eight bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, living room, playroom and laundry facilities. To accommodate more families RMHC-Norfolk, added nine more bedrooms, increased the size of the kitchen, and added a playroom, boardroom, quiet room and handicap room in 2001.
The House is made possible by many donors and volunteers in our community who want to be an encouragement to the families who stay with us.
